Mother and 3 daughters killed in Brampton crash identified, mayor shares video of 'reckless' driver

A mother and her three daughters killed in a horrific collision Thursday afternoon in Brampton have been identified as Karolina Ciasullo and her children Klara, 6, Liliana, 4, and Mila, 1.

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board said Ciasullo, 37,was a Grade 4 teacher atSt. Isaac Jogues Catholic Elementary School in Brampton. The board extended its condolences to Ciasullo's husband and family.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown is blaming a reckless driver with a suspended licence forthe crash.

Brown shared a video on social media late Thursday that allegedly shows the driver,who appears to be unresponsive, lurching through an intersection as onlookers try to intervene.

It was filmed at least two days before the fatal crash.

In the video,a blue Infiniti coupe mounts a sidewalk while a pedestrian attempts to open the car's door and pull the driver out.

"Turn it off! Turn it off!" people can be heard yelling amid the sound of screeching tires, before the driver reverses and speeds away.

"Community members & police tried to stop the driver. He was having none of it," Brown wrote on Twitter. "He belongs behind bars for taking 4 innocent lives."

Ontario Provincial Police confirmed to CBC Toronto that the video was reported to them on Tuesday, June 16.

A member of a community Facebook group says he provided the video to police with hopes that the driver might be identified.

"We are aware of the video and continue to investigate the incident. It would not be appropriate to further comment on this active investigation," said an Sgt. J.T. Folz.

Brown also saysthe driver has a prohibited licence due to "multiple" driving offences, and that the car's licence plates did not match the vehicle.

The driver has not been publicly identified by police, nor have any charges been announced.

'Throw the key away,' Premier urges

Ontario Premier Doug Ford extended his condolences to the family at a Friday news conference before slamming drivers found responsible in similarly devastating collisions.

"I'd throw the key away, I'd keep these guys in jail for the rest of their lives," Ford said.

Ford also called on the federal government to introduce tougher penalties for people convicted in deadly collisions while commenting on the tragedy.

"These lenient sentences are unacceptable," he said."Wiping out an entire family, young children, and they get out in a few years? Unacceptable."

Marco Muzzo, a drunk driver who killed three children and their grandfather in 2015, was granted day parole this spring, approximately four years into a 10-year sentence.

Police watchdog investigating crash

A preliminary investigation by the SIU found that a Peel police officer spotted a blue Infiniti travelling eastbound on Countryside Drive shortly after noon on Thursday.

Moments later, the car slammed into a Volkswagen Atlas SUV, sending the vehicle and the Ciasullofamily careening into a light pole.

Six-year-old Klara was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Ciasullo, Liliana and Mila were all transported to hospital, where they later died of their injuries.

The driver of the blue Infiniti suffered a broken leg, Brown said. He remains in hospital and islisted in serious condition.

The SIU, which is called when there are deaths, serious injuries or allegations of sexual assault in cases involving police, invoked its mandate to investigate soon afterwards.

SIU spokeswoman Monica Hudon would not say whether a police chase was underway before the crash, or what transpired in the moments leading up to it.

The SIU says seven investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case. Investigators have also interviewed more than a dozen civilian witnesses who were at the site of the collision.
