Man dead after stabbing inside Brampton apartment, police say

A man is dead after being stabbed inside a Brampton apartment building Wednesday, police say.

Police say there is no threat to public safety in the area

A man is dead after an early morning stabbing inside a Brampton apartment building on Wednesday, Peel police say.

Police say the stabbing took placejust after 8:30 a.m. at a low-rise building on Baycliffe Crescent. Officers arrived to find the victim on the second floor,Const. Nikhil Chakravarthy said.

Police haven't identified the victim and say they are workingto find out whether the man was a resident of the apartment building.

Chakravarthy says there is a singlemalesuspectwho may have known the victim. He saidthe suspect isfamiliar to police and is "actively evading" them.

Police believe there is no threat to the community, Chakravarthy said.

"We understand how unnerving something like this would be at 8:30 a.m," Chakravarthy said.

Peel's homicide unit is investigating the incident.

Investigators have been speaking with residents of the unit, as well as, those who might know the suspect, Chakravarthy said.

Neighbours say incident is 'shocking'

Neighbours who spoke to CBC News were shocked by the incident.

"It happened behind my house. I don't know what happened," said Saurabh Malhotra, who moved to the neighbourhood recently. "I've heard of stabbingsat Square One, Sherway Garden but it is really shocking for me that a stabbing happened in my neighbourhood."

Michelle Anthony lives on the street where the stabbing took place.

She says she went out for a walk at 7 a.m. with her dog and did not see anything unusual.

"It was like a regular morning until I heard my doorbell and looked out and realized something serious is happening here," Anthony said."This is the first time I've seen this many cops here, ever."

Parts of Baycliffe Crescent are closed as police investigate.

Jasdeep Singh says he's lived on the second floor of the buildingfor two years and was stunned to learn about the incident.

"I'm really shocked about this, it happened on my floor," Singh said.

Police are asking anyone with video footage or information to contact Peel's homicide branch.
