Gas station attendant death from 2011 ends in arrest

Police have arrested and charged a man wanted in the 2011 death of a gas station attendant who was killed while trying to stop a gas theft in Mississauga.

Police arrested 22-year-oldAbdullahi Mohamoud after an "extensive five-month investigation" and charged him with:

• Failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing death.
• Criminal negligence causing death.
• Theft Under $5,000.
• Breach of Recognizance.

Mohamoud was reportedly working at Husky Sunrise in Fort McMurray when a co-worker recognized his face and phoned police.

The charges are in connection with the death of Atifeh Rad, 62, who died on May 19, 2011, while trying to stop a driver from fleeing a Petro-Canada station on Southdown Road near the Queen Elizabeth Way. Police say the man tried to leave without paying for $75 worth of gas. He was driving a Nissan Altima.

Rad was dragged under the car and later died in hospital.

Acting on a tip, RCMP in Fort McMurray, Atlta., arrested Mohamoud. After facing charges accumulated in western provinces, he will be brought back to Ontario to face the charges laid here.
