Outspoken council member hands out black arm bands to cab drivers

Toronto Coun.GiorgioMammolititoldan Uber Canada representative Wednesday he wants Uber drivers to "get out"of his ward.

Mammoliti made the comment at a morning committee meeting heldto discusses new licensing rules for the city's taxi cabs.

"I don't want Uber drivers in my ward. Get out," saidMammoliti.

The outspoken Ward 7 (York West) councilloralso handed out black arm bands at the meeting, saying new licensing rules proposed in a staff report would mean "the death of the taxi industry."

"I've bought a few hundredof these bands today and I'm going to be asking taxi drivers to put them on to remind everybody at city hall that the people that are wearing the bands are the ones that have played by the rules."

Cab drivers are angry at a staff report that calls on the city to createa new licensing category that would allow ride-sharing companies like Uber tobe regulated by the city.

Cab industry representatives say the move would force them to compete with companies that run an identical service while operatingunder less stringent regulations.
