3 impaired drivers arrested in York Region overnight

Even with all of the attention placed on drunk drivers lately, it seems like some people just aren't getting the message.

York Regional Police said in a release that they arrested three motorists overnight and charged allof them with driving over the legal blood alcohol limit.

"Impaired driving is a senseless and preventable offence," Const. Andy Pattenden said in a video message. "Once again, we're telling everybody: if you drink, do drugs don't drive."

The first incident took place Wednesday after 11 p.m. when a white Lincoln SUV allegedly side-swiped another car and kept drivingnear Elgin Mills Road and Shirley Drive in Richmond Hill. Police said they located the vehicle driving south on Leslie Street near Highway 7 East and saw the SUV hit a curb while weaving in and out of the lane.

When the light turned green, police said the vehicle did not move for several seconds. That's when theydecided to pull over the SUV but the driver refused until she was boxed in by a police cruiser.

A 42-year-old Toronto woman failed a breath test at the station and was charged with impaired driving, failure to stop at the scene of a collision anddriving with80 milligrams of alcohol per 100millilitresof blood.

The second incident took placeThursdayshortly after 12:30 a.m. Police said they conducted a traffic stop of a pickup truck near Doughtonand Maplecrete roads in Vaughan. Officers noted in the statement that a strong odour of alcohol was coming from the 21-year-old man.

He failed a roadside sobriety test and was arrested.

At around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, police said they saw a vehicle driving 35 km/h over the speed limit on Keele Street near Drummond Drive in Vaughan. Officers said they saw the van swerve in and out of lanes before eventually stopping at Teston Road. Police said they noticed a strong smell of alcohol and gavethe 35-year-old drivera roadside test, which she failed.

The three impaired driving arrests in York Region took place just oneday after Marco Muzzo told a sentencing hearing in Newmarket that he is "tortured by the grief" he caused when he drove drunk and killed four people during a three-vehicle crash in Vaughanon Sept. 27, 2015.
