Man to fight extradition in gruesome U.S. cold case

The lawyer for a suspect arrested in Toronto in a 14-year-old murder case in the U.S. says he is "aggressively fighting" his client's extradition.

Kai-Guo Huang, 35, appeared at a hearing today and was remanded in custody until his next appearance Oct. 9.

Huang was arrested on Aug. 7 in the city's northeast on charges of drunk driving. Police say Huang gave them a false name, identifying himself as Yu Chen, which he had used to obtain a permanent residency card in 2010.

He was arrested again three days later after he wasidentified as a suspect in a cold case in Philadelphia through fingerprint analysis.

Huang faces charges of murder, conspiracy, possession of an instrument of crime and abuse of a corpse, stemming from the 1998 murder and dismemberment of a male victim named Hoi Yang.

Huang's lawyer, Ravin Pillay, says his client is innocent of the charges, adding that supporters of Huang from his local church attended the hearing.

Philadelphia Police say Huang has a brother named Kai-Xing Huang who is also a suspect in the crime, and Toronto police are checking to see if he could also be in Canada.
