Meteorologist Jay Scotland is leaving his role as a meteorologist with CBC Toronto and Windsor to join CBC PEI's supper hour newscast Compass.

Scotland started in the CBC Toronto newsroom as its primary meteorologist in 2015 after four years as the meteorologist with CBC News Network's morning show.

"While my family is really excited about this new adventure ahead, we are also very sad to be saying goodbye to our friends here in Whitby and Toronto," Scotland said.

"Since the birth of my sonHudson, I've been longing to have more time to spend with my kids and this move to Prince Edward Island offers a change of pace that will definitely help in that regard," he said.

"This was far from an easy decision but I feel like it's the right one for me and my family."

Born in Hamilton and raised in Dunnville, Ont., Scotland started his career as a radio announcer in Kingston before filling in as a weather specialist at the local CBC affiliate CKWS TV.

Scotland continued as a weather specialist at CHEX TV in Peterborough before enrolling in the renowned operational meteorology program at Mississippi State University.

He later earned the coveted "Weathercaster Endorsement" from the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS).

"Compass is thrilled to have Jay Scotland join our team. Jay's warm, engaging personality and his passion for the community will be a welcome addition," said Jim Ferguson, CBC PEI's senior manager.

Scotland and CBC have not announced when he will sign off from CBC Toronto and Windsor.

CBC Toronto will conduct a search for a replacement.
