NDP demand more hearings on destruction of gas plants documents

The New Democrats want Premier Kathleen Wynne to recall the legislature and restart committee hearings into the destruction of documents on the cancellation of two gas plants at a cost of up to $1.1 billion.

Court documents released Thursday show the Liberals paid a computer expert with no security clearance $10,000 to wipe hard drives in the premier's office of what the NDP call "incriminating evidence."

NDP house leader Gilles Bisson wrote Wynne to say the "orchestrated coverup" of gas plants documents calls into question the integrity and honesty of her and the entire Liberal government.

The Liberals shut down committee hearings into the gas plants in October after the opposition asked that computer tech Peter Faist be called to testify about his efforts to scrub the government computers of data.

Bisson says the documents prepared by police to obtain a search warrant of the government's cyber security office shows senior Liberals "took every step possible to get around" requests to produce gas plants-related emails.

The Progressive Conservatives say at the very least the Liberal party should repay taxpayers the $10,000 they paid for the destruction of the documents.
