Public asked for input on Gardiner future

Torontonians are being asked for their input on what to do with the eastern section of the Gardiner Expressway.
A public meeting will be held on June 13 to get input from Torontonians on what to do with the Gardiner Expressway. (CBC)

Toronto city staff are looking for public input into what to do with the Gardiner Expressway.

In particular, staff want people to say whether they want the roadway running from the Don Valley Parkway to Jarvis Street to be repaired, remodelled, or pulled down.

The city has come up with four alternatives:

  • Maintain the highway and keep patching it.
  • Improve it and what's underneath.
  • Put a new expressway underground.
  • Replace it with a grand boulevard.

"These are ideas, not designs," said John Campbell of Waterfront Toronto. "Just basically to prompt debate and discussion."

A major overhaul to the eastern section is needed before 2020.

Members of the public will get an opportunity to have their say at a public consultationat the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on June 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Staff will present council with the best options next year.

In the meantime, minor repairs will continue to be done.
