Rob Ford runs for Toronto mayor

Rob Ford, a Toronto councillor known for his attacks on wasteful spending, has become the latest person to join the race for mayor of Canada's largest city.

Ford announced his candidacyThursday morning on a radio talk show, aiming to replace David Miller, who has said he won't seek re-election after two terms.

The 40-year-oldfrom Toronto's west end is perhaps best known for his very vocal campaign against waste at city hall and councillors' expenses.

Ford doesn't claim a centin his yearly office expenses.

Hesaid he wouldofficially file his nomination paperslater Thursday, buthis name already appears on the list of candidates on the City of Toronto website.

Ford willrun in the fall election against at least 27 others,including deputy mayor Joe Pantalone, former Ontario cabinet minister George Smitherman, former Liberal organizer Rocco Rossi and businesswoman Sarah Thomson.
