Should local bars open early for Olympic hockey fans?

Should Toronto city council allow bars to open at 6 a.m. so local fans can watch the Olympic hockey finals with a drink in hand?

It's a question councillors will tackle today.

The motion is backed by Coun. Mike Layton and would be in place only for the duration of the Sochi Games. The spirit of the move is to allow hockey fans to watch the Olympic hockey tournament elimination games, particularly Sunday morning men's hockey final, while enjoying a beverage.

Generally such extensions happen at night but with Sochi's time zone nine hours ahead and Sunday's final set for 7 a.m., this will require a move to allow drinking when most people are pouring coffee.

"We've done it before for the World Cup," said Layton. "Why not to cheer on Canada's Olympic teams?

"We do it very frequently for other events, we call them events of municipal significance, but it's normally in the evening, this just happens to be in the morning."

Coun. Giorgio Mammoliti said it's time for the city's liquor laws to "grow up" and said he supports allowing the bars to stay open until 5 a.m. year-round.
