Man seriously hurt in stabbing on TTC streetcar, police say

A man is seriously injured and another has beencharged aftera stabbing on a TTC streetcar on Tuesday afternoon.

Toronto police said the stabbing happened at about 3:10 p.m. in the area of St. Patrick Street and Dundas Street West.

In a news release on Wednesday, police said neither the suspect nor victim knew each other.

Police said the two got into a verbal altercation on the streetcar that turned physical. One man pulled out a knife and stabbed the other, they said.

Police said the victim was taken to hospital by paramedics. His injuries were considered serious but non-life-threatening, according to Toronto paramedics.

Police said the suspect fled westbound on Dundas Street West following the stabbing and was later arrested. Officers recovered a knife, police said.

The suspect, 55, of Toronto, has been charged with aggravated assault, weapons dangerous and carrying a concealed weapon. He was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Roads in the areawere closedas police investigated.

TTC spokesperson Stuart Green said on Tuesday that the transit agency is helping police with its investigation.

"We're aware of the incident this afternoon and we continue to assist [police] as they investigate, including sharing video evidence from the vehicle," Green said.

"While we don't yet know the circumstances around this incident, the safety and security of our customers and employees is paramount, which is why we made record investments in these areas in our last budget. Our thoughts are with the victim for a full recovery."

In a service alert on X, the TTC said its 505 Dundas streetcar took a temporary detour due to a security incident but regular service has resumed.
