Family, friends mourn man shot dead in west end

Friends and family members of Abdulle Elmi are still coming to grips with his violent death, as they prepare to move on to a life without him.

Elmi, 25, was shot dead and left on an Etobicoke street last Thursday. Toronto police said he had no connection to theneighbourhood where he was found.

A post-mortem examination found that Elmidied as a result of multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.

Homicide investigators are now trying to piece together the reasons for his death and the person or persons responsible. So far, they have not made any arrests.

Elmi's funeral was held in a North Toronto mosque on Sunday, with mourners coming from as far away as Ohio to pay their respects.

A surviving cousin told CBC News that there was more to Elmi than what has been said about him since his death.

"He was definitely a beautiful person, he was a well-educated young man. He was a scholar, he was many things aside from the stories that have been put out in the media in terms of how he died and what had happened," said Abdulle Elmi, whose name is the spelled the same way as the deceased.

The slain Toronto man had previously lived in Minnesota, where he was part of a hip-hop group called the Usual Suspects.

Elmi's deathis the 26th known homicide in Toronto so far this year.
