Honest Ed's, iconic Toronto discount store, is for sale

Honest Ed's discount store an icon in Toronto's Annex neighbourhood is up for sale.

CBC News confirmed Tuesday the massive discount store at the corner of Bloor and Bathurst streets is on the block, along with some surrounding property.

Opened by "Honest Ed" Mirvish in 1948, the massive retailer is a Toronto landmark.

The store's familiar faade has appeared in a handful of films shot in Toronto, including Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Honest Ed's is known for its Las Vegas-style marquee,illuminated by thousands of lights. The store is also famous for its cheeky, pun-heavy signs such as "Honest Ed's a nut, but look at thecashew save!"

And although Honest Ed's is billed as a palace of low prices, its unlikely the purchaser of the property will be getting much of a bargain as the store occupies an entire block of prime real estate on Bloor Street across from the subway.
