Teen cyclist dies in hospital after Ajax collision

A teenage cyclist has died in hospital of her injuries after she was hit and pinned under an SUV while riding across a crosswalk, Durham police said Thursday.

A teenage cyclist has died in hospitalafter she was hit and pinned under an SUV while riding across a crosswalk, Durham police said Thursday.

Police said the collision happened around 7:35 a.m. on Rossland Road W., between Carter Bennett Drive and Ravenscroft Road.

The 13-year-old girl who was struck suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto, police said.

At 6:45p.m., police said in a news release that the girl succumbed toher injuries.

Investigators said the driver of the black Hyundai Sante Fe remained at the scene after the collision. Police said they were southbound onStevensgateDrive when they struck the teen, who was using a crosswalk near Rossland Road W.

Anyone with information about the collision is being asked to contact police.
