Toronto man convicted in officer's death

A 23-year-old Toronto man was found guilty Thursday in the death of a York Region Police officer in 2007.

Nadeem Jiwa was convicted of manslaughter for hitting Det.-Const. Robert Plunkett with a car and killing him.

Jiwa was found not guilty on a charge first-degree murder.

Plunkett died in August, 2007, during an investigation into air bag thefts.

Police say he tried to make an arrest on a residential street in Markham, Ont., when he was dragged by a reversing car and pinned between a tree and the car's open door.

Plunkett, a 22-year veteran who served with the force's Special Services Unit, won awards for his bravery on the job, and was once named "toughest cop alive" at the Canadian Law Enforcement Games for his strength and athleticism.

Jiwa will be sentenced on June 21.
