Road crews will be out tackling the usual problems on city roads in the weeks and months ahead, which means drivers need to be aware of what is coming their way.

City to spend $215 million on various road, bridge and expressway projects

Road crews will be out tackling the usual problems on city roads in the weeks and months ahead, which means drivers need to be aware of what is coming their way.

On Monday, Denzil Minnan-Wong, the chair of the citys public works and infrastructure committee, unveiled the list of major road work the city will undertake this year.

"We've got a lot of work planned this year and its going to go a long way in terms of keeping our roads and bridges in a state of good repair," Minnan-Wong said Monday.

In total, Minnan-Wong said the city expects to spend $215 million on various road, bridge and expressway projects. There will also be $60 million spent on sewer and watermain projects over this same time period.

As usual, the work being done will create problems for drivers at times. But the public works chair said thats just the way it is.

"Some of this work just has to happen," Minnan-Wong said.

Those road, bridge and expressway projects the city plans to purse include:

  • Major road resurfacing on Markham Road, from Kingston Road to Lawrence Avenue East
  • Major road resurfacing on Lawrence Avenue East, from Kingston Road to Markham Road
  • Major road resurfacing on Victoria Park Avenue, from Eglinton Avenue East to Lawrence Avenue East
  • Major road resurfacing on Wilson Avenue from Bathurst Street to Dufferin Street
  • Major road resurfacing on Transit Road from Allen Road to Wilson Avenue
  • Major road resurfacing on Finch Avenue West from Dufferin Street to Signet Drive
  • Major road resurfacing on Finch Avenue West from Kipling Avenue to Highway 27
  • Major road resurfacing on Kipling Avenue from Bloor Street West to Dixon Road
  • Major road resurfacing on Parkside Drive from Lake Shore Boulevard West to Bloor Street West
  • Major road resurfacing on Queens Park Crescent from College Street to Bloor Street West
  • Major road reconstruction on Wellesley Street West from Yonge Street to Hart House Circle
  • Major road resurfacing on Kingston Road from Birchmount Avenue to Victoria Park Avenue East
  • Major road resurfacing on Richmond Street East from Church Street to Power Street
  • Major road resurfacing on the westbound Lake Shore Boulevard West from the Don River to the Don Roadway
  • Major road resurfacing on the westbound Lake Shore Boulevard West from Yonge Street to Bathurst Street
  • Major road resurfacing on the eastbound Lake Shore Boulevard from Lower Spadina Avenue to Bathurst Street
  • Major road resurfacing on Lake Shore Boulevard West at Bathurst Street
  • Major road resurfacing on Lake Shore Boulevard West at Stadium Road
  • Major road resurfacing on the westbound Lake Shore Boulevard West at Strachan Avenue
  • Major road resurfacing on Lake Shore Boulevard from Newfoundland Drive to British Columbia Road
  • Major road resurfacing on the westbound Lake Shore Boulevard Avenue West at Windermere Avenue
  • Major road resurfacing on Bayview Avenue from Truman Road to York Mills Road
  • Intersection rehab on Highway 27 from Belfield Avenue to the highway intersection

The city will also be working on three projects on the Gardiner Expressway,all of which are slated to begin on April 25. These include:

  • Deck replacement on the elevated part of the Gardiner Expressway running between the CNE and Grand Magazine Street, as well as the demolition of the Garrison Road bridge that runs under the highway. This work will require the closing of one lane in each direction.
  • The rehabilitation of three bridges between the Humber River and Park Lawn Avenue. One lane of eastbound traffic will be closed as a result of this work.
  • Replacement of the median between Ellis Road and Dufferin Road. This work will close one lane in each direction of the Gardiner.

A long winter has also left the city with about twice the number of potholes that it normally must repair, Minnan-Wong said.

According to figures released by the city, crews have repaired 130,000 potholes in the period stretching from Jan. 1 through early April. The cost associated with these repairs is $2.2 million.

Over the same period last year, the city repaired 66,000 potholes at a cost of $1.3 million.
