Starting next week, thousands of trees will be cut down in the Greater Toronto Area to combat an infestation of Asian long-horned beetles.

The beetles have been discovered in North York and Etobicoke, as well as in the city of Vaughn.

The beetles attack and kill hardwood trees such as maple, willow and birch.

In announcing the eradication program, federal Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief said every level of government would be enlisted to help contain the outbreak.

"Together with out partners at the municipal, provincial and federal levels of government, we will work to prevent the further spread of this pest, in order to save one of our most valuable natural resources our nation's hardwood trees," he said.

The tree-cutting project is being undertaken by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

It is also seeking permission to use new pesticides to contain the beetles.
