The TTC board voted Tuesday to continue with its plan to end freepublic Wi-Fi at subway stations, although it did agree to study the possibility of putting internet zones into bus bays in the future.

Coun. Josh Matlowput forward a motion asking the TTC to reconsider, but that failed.

"It was disappointing that a narrow majority of the TTC board didn't even want to explore continuing free WiFi on subway platforms that many thousands of low income Torontonians, many of whom can't afford expensive data plans, rely on every day," Matlow said in a statement to CBC Toronto.

Matlow said he was pleased his motion to consider putting service into other transit spaces did pass.

Earlier in September, the TTC announced it was cancelling the service, citing a steep drop in rider usage along with reliability, security and cost concerns.

At the time, the transit agency said it would cost $17 million to upgrade the infrastructure.

  • A previous version of this story, in text and video format, stated the TTC would continue offering free Wi-Fi in its subway stations. In fact, the TTC will still end that program at the end of 2024 as previously announced.
