Charles Shillingford identified as victim of downtown shooting

Toronto police are searching for a gunman following the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old Toronto man early Saturday morning.

Police are now calling the case a homicide, saying the victim was attempting to flee the scene after being shot while sitting in his car on Charles Street, near YongeStreet,at about 2:25 a.m. He drove south down Yongebut then crashed his car momentslater, south of College Street.

Police identified the man Sunday as Charles Shillingford.

Another vehicle was also involved in the crash, which caused "quite a lot" of property damage, according to Det.-Sgt. Hank Idsinga of the Toronto police homicide unit.

Shillngford was taken to hospital, where he died. On Sunday, police reported he died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

A second person was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The shooting appears to have been targeted but not gang-related,Idsinga told reporters shortly after noon Saturday.

"The victim was just trying to flee the scene,Iimagine get himself to the hospital and escape," he said.

The victim, who was known to police, was leaving a nearby nightclub when he was shot,Idsinga said. The detective said police are still trying to piece together the moments leading up to the shooting, as well as establish a motive.

He said police believe they are looking for one gunman, and are reviewing surveillance video footage of the scene.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, although it is not known it if was used in the attack.
