More than 20,000 people hit the streets of Detroit and Windsor, Ont., on Sunday for an international, cross-border marathon.

The 33rd Detroit Free Press marathon course brought runners over the Ambassador Bridge to Windsor, along Riverside Drive and then back to downtown Detroit through an international tunnel under the Detroit River.

The marathon affords participants a unique view of both border crossings, which are normally closed to pedestrian traffic of any kind.

"I run with different people each year and, yeah, it makes it fun," said Paul Sherman, of LaSalle, Ont., who has run the marathon 15 times.

"This is really a well organized run and the course is just fabulous. Running over the bridge with the sunrise is amazing."

A Canadian, Paula Keating, 44, of Miramichi, N.B., won the women's marathon in 2:52:14.

The winner of the men's race was first-time marathoner Jordan Desilets, 29, of Pinckney, Mich., who completed the course in 2:28:30.
