Chantal Valle is a five-time national champion head coach of the University of Windsor Lancers women's basketball team, leading her teams through good times and bad.

With pressures on court and on campus, Valle has spent a lot of time acting as a coach and a counsellor to her student athletes.

In a new series for CBC's Windsor MorningValle will offer advice and insight.

Here is the first lesson from Valle

Your mindset makes a difference.

Your mindset is very important. There's a book called MindSetwhich says "The mindset we choose for ourselves has an impact of how our lives will evolve." I always tell my players, the challenges of life will be brought to you. It's the same thing in our own work and our own personal life. The mindset you choose will determine your method of success.

Carol Dweck writes in MindSetthat you shouldimagine a bad day at school or work, you get a C+ in your favourite class. You go home and get a parking ticket, then you're frustrated, you call a friend to talk and they brush you off. You're really hurt.

How do we handle this?

She writes that people either have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. People with the growth mindset will get out of the disappointment and learn from it.

Michael Jordan was cut from a basketball team. What did he do? He worked harder, trained harder and prepared harder and eventually became the Michael Jordan we know. People who feel they are successful because they work hard not because they are talented will want to work harder.
