The City of Windsor auctioned off three properties Friday, seized from owners who neglected to pay their municipal taxes.

Three bids came in for a house on Elm Street West, with the winning offer topping out at $25,900. Another home on Elliott Street West sold for $45,888. Five bids came in for a vacant lot across from Northwood Public School on Longfellow Avenue. That lot sold for $21,000. A bid for a home on Brock Street was rejected because it came in below the minimum tender $22,731.47

On the map, the yellowhouse represents a residential property, the purple building an industrial property and the orange flags a vacant lot.

The tender was based on the amount owed to the city in tax arrears as well as any additional charges levied on the property.

Properties were sold "as is" and bidders were required to put up 20 per cent of the minimum tender when they place their bid.

A total of nine properties were up for auction Friday. The six properties that were not sold can still be redeemed by the owner, or put back up for auction by the city.

The city is planning another auction in mid-August and one more scheduled for early November.

After two years, if the tax arrears are not paid or the city is unable to auction off the property, the city can take ownership.

As of February of 2015, the city had 73 properties for sale. Of those, 47 are residential properties, 12 are commercial or mixed-used, five are industrial and nine are vacant lots.

  • A previous version of this story said 11 properties were up for auction. In fact, nine are. Two property owners settled their debt late Thursday.
