U.S. Coast Guard rescues man floating on ice in Detroit River

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man from the Detroit River Wednesday morning, just moments after the man stopped moving while in the water.

Witnesses say they saw the man walking on the ice near the CoboCenter, where the North American International AutoShow is hosted, according to a Coast Guard spokesman.

A call to 911 came in just minutes after 10 a.m. when the man first plunged into the water, explainedBenjamin Chamberlain, public affairs officer for the U.S. Coast Guard.

"That person was seen by security walking outwards on the ice until he fell through and then he was seen floating down the river," he told CBC News.

A Coast Guard cutter ship, which waspatrollingthe area at the time,was dispatched to rescue the man.Crews then deployed a smaller vessel to pull the man from the water.

The extent of the man's injuries are not known.
