10 dead snakes freak out London woman taking out trash

A London woman felt her skin crawl Friday morning when she took out her trash and found a den of 10 dead snakes scattered in the grass.

Kate Fowler made the gruesome discovery outside her quiet co-op housing complex near Victoria Hospital. With recycling in one hand and a bag of garbage in the other, she thought she found one large snake.

Then she saw the rest.

In complete shock, she ran away and summoned a neighbour to come back with her to confirm what she found.

"It's like the stuff of nightmares," Fowler said. "Snakes behind a cage is one thing, but lying on your front curb? Yuck."

Fowler eventually called London Humane Society officials, who were just as baffled by the snakes. Executive director, Judy Foster, says the investigation will require a veterinarian with expertise in snakes to determine how they died.

"We do believe that these are exotic snakes, so it's a limited group of veterinarians locally and in southwestern Ontario who can help us out," she said.

Fowler is still alarmed because the snakes appear to be left there to purposely shock people.

"The snakes weren't bagged. It looks as though they were put there intentionally to get attention," she said.

Hours after her discovery, Fowler remains flabbergasted.

"Completely shocking. It's not something you ever see in your garbage," she said. "I'd rather it be dog poop, or needles or dirty diapers, not 10 snakes."
