LaSalle council latest to adopt dog-tethering regulations

The town is one of a handful of municipalities to adopt regulations that specifically outline how long a dog can be tethered. Kingsville, Windsor, Essex and Amherstburg have all adopted similar bylaws.

LaSalle town council became the latest community in the Windsor region to protect dogs with an updated animal bylaw that restricts how longowners can leave a dog tied up outdoors to just four hours.

The town is one of a handful of municipalities in EssexCountyto adopt regulations that specifically outline how long a dog can be tethered. Kingsville, Windsor, Essex and Amherstburg have all adopted similar bylaws.

The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society has been the loudest proponent in the region for bylaws that specifically set rules around tethering. The group's executive director, Melanie Coulter, spoke to LaSalle council Tuesday, calling the dog tethering bylaw an "animal issue and a community issue."

When council members talked about the lack of complaints about dog tethering in their community, Coulter was quick to inform them that there have been orders issued against dog owners in LaSalle.
