The OPP is telling drivers they have to start shaping up when it comes to stopping for school buses.

The Independent School Bus Operators Association carried out its own province-wide study on how often motorists ignore school bus stop signals.

The association claims that over a five-day period in May period, bus drivers reported 151 daily occasions where vehicles failed to stop for the school bus, when the lights were flashing.

With most classes starting next week, Const. Liz Melvin said the OPP is worried.

"Such incidents is a significant concern for us," said Melvin. "Public safety is always the number one concern for us, especially involving children. Bus drivers are not the only people responsible for the life of the children."

Melvin said the majority of these incidents happened when the vehicle was approaching the bus from the front.

Failure to stop for a school bus results into a $490 fine and six demerit points upon conviction.
