A handful of Everest College students held a rally outside of the school on Ouellette Avenue in Windsor on Tuesday morning.

"The rallies are what we can do at this point. That's it. We can't get any answers anywhere else," said Stephanie Snary.

About five students said they still have not received any definitive answers from the Ministry of Education on next steps.

"When the Ministry came here, they say they are here for our best. Where are they now?" said Shahla Tabassum, who attended Everest.

On Feb. 19, the superintendent of private career colleges, the independent regulator that governs schools like Everest, said it suspended the chain's licence to operate in Ontario as a private college, effective immediately.

Everest College has 14 private career schools across Ontario, including one in Windsor.

The office "can propose to revoke a private career college's registration if [the superintendent] no longer satisfied that it can be expected to be financially responsible in its operation as a private career college, considering its current financial position," the regulator said in a statement.

"It's horrifying," said Natasha Marier. "I have two kids at home and I'm trying to better myself, get an education and give them a good life, and I'm told we can't even finish our practicum and it sucks."

No other reason for the shutdown was given.

St. Clair College officials consulted with former Everest students to discuss potential transfers.

More than 2,400 students attended Everest College across the province.
