Falling Ambassador Bridge debris to keep street closed

City officials say Wyandotte Street West will likely remain closed between Huron Church Road and Indian Road for the rest of the week, as they sort out what needs to be done in the wake offalling debris from the Ambassador Bridge.

The City of Windsor closed the street Oct. 9 as a precaution against fallen debris from bridge.

The city is meeting with Ambassador Bridge representatives this week to determine next steps prior to reopening the area.

A gaping hole in the bridge can be seen from the street below.

In an email to Radio-Canada, Transport Canada said the bridge must undergo routine inspections.

"The International Bridges and Tunnels Regulations requires the owner of an international bridge to ensure that scheduled detailed visual inspections and underwater inspections are performed, and to submit a report on the condition of the bridge after each inspection to Transport Canada," the email said. "As per the requirements of the regulations, a detailed visual inspection must be completed at a minimum, once every two years, and a underwater inspection must be completed at a minimum of once every five years."

Later Tuesday, Transport Canada told Radio-Canada that it had conducted its own inspection and found deficiencies. But it saidthe bridge company is workingto rectify them.

Ambassador Bridge officials have yet to comment despite numerous calls from CBC News.
