Coun. Fulvio Valentinis is leading a crusade against run-down, vacant buildings. He has his own list of 10 properties in his own ward.

Council told administrators Monday night they want to deal with the issue of blight as soon as possible.

"I think it's raising the awareness," Valentinis said. "And raising the issue that we're going to more aggressively pursue compliance whether it's remedying and fixing them up or whether it's demolishing."

A report on how to proceed will be ready in about six weeks.

"Hopefully at that point we'll be on the verge if not having torn a few down - at least doing that the most derelict ones," Valentinis said. "Administration has already started working on speaking to the property owners so that there aren't any surprises. So they know the clock is ticking and it's going to start ticking pretty fast."
