Invasive beetle found at border

American border agents founda dreaded invasiveinsect crossing into Detroit from Windsor.

Agriculture specialists at the Fort Street Cargo Facility uncovered live larvae of the invasive Khapra Beetle.

They were inspecting an incoming sea container from the Ivory Coast that had traveled through Canada by rail to Detroit.

The shipment of wood veneer was destined for Washington State.

Joseph Diego is with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

"They found a little nest in there like a mouse or something had made a nest.There was corn kernels in that nest, and they could see things crawling inside," Diego said.

The shipment was quarantined and will be fumigated.

According to the Canadian Grain Commission, the Khapra beetle infests various stored grains and stored products such as oats, rye, corn, dried milk, fishmeal, nuts, seeds and cereal products.
