Kingsville mayor stepping down after nearly 20 years

Nelson Santos, the longtime mayor of Kingsville, is not seeking re-election in October and is stepping down effective next month.

Nelson Santos, the longtime mayor of Kingsville, is not seeking re-election in October and is stepping down effective next month.

Santos was first elected as mayor 19 years ago and has served on council since 1997.

He said that he was proud of how the community has grown and developed andthat after 25 years he felt he had committed his time.

"I believe certainly it's an opportunity for others to step forward," he said.

Santos is resigningto pursue a new career opportunity that will allow him more time with his family. He acknowledged that the strain of the pandemicand pandemic recovery played a role in his decision.

He described his new roleas an opportunityto "continue to do what I enjoy in terms of community building and supporting communities" and indicated that an announcement would be made shortly.

Santos' departure comes just four months before municipal elections are held across Ontario.

The town says it's working with Santos "to ensure a smooth transition and seamless continuation of municipal business."

Under the town's bylaws, the deputy mayor takes over for the mayor until a new one is appointed.

Santos's last day isJuly 17.
