Ontario father drowns trying to save son

Ontario Provincial Police have recovered the body of a Dresden, Ont., man who drowned Saturday while boating on Lake St. Clair.

Ontario Provincial Police have recovered the body of a Dresden, Ont., man who drowned Saturday while boating on Lake St. Clair.

The 37-year-old man had jumped into the water near Lighthouse Cove when it appeared as if his son was having trouble swimming, said police.

The man and two friends set out with five children in a small vesselon Saturday afternoon.

They stopped the boat so the children could go for a swim in the lake.

When one of the children appeared to be in distress, the Dresden man jumped into the water without a life-jacket.

Police said he struggled and went below the surface, while the children managed to safely reach the boat.

The adults on the boat called for help over the marine radio, with the first vessel arriving within 10 minutes.

The Coast Guard Rescue Co-ordination Centre, OPP marine units and the United States Coast Guard searched the water for nearly 24 hours, before the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit pulled the body of the man from the water around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police have not released the man's name pending a post-mortem examination.
