Port authority, environmentalists to discuss Ojibway Shores

Local environmental groups plan to meet with the Windsor Port Authority to discuss the future of Ojibway Shores.

Earlier this year, the authority put on hold a controversial proposal to clearcut what environmentalists call the last stretch of natural shoreline in Windsor for future development.

Strong opposition forced the port authority to drop its plan.

At the time, the authority said it wanted to meet with environmental groups and others to help identify possible alternatives to the development of Ojibway Shores.

Derek Coronado, a co-ordinator with the Citizens Environment Alliance, says the key is to decide how the port authority can be compensated while keeping Ojibway Shores a natural area.

"The crux of the matter is getting through the details of that. I think after the public meeting at Mackenzie Hall, maybe, the port authority is more willing to listen," Coronado said.

A meeting is planned later this month.
