Stand Up Man began filming inside Dillon Hall at the University of Windsor on Monday.

It's the first feature from director Aram Collier and producer Tony Lau.

"It's a film about a young couple who has to move back to Windsor and their relative who comes to stay with them from Korea,"Collier told CBC News in an interview on Monday.

"There's elements of stand-up comedy and K-pop dance, so it's a family comedy."

Lau and Collier met while studying film production at Toronto's York University.

They had lots of reasons to set Stand Up Man in Windsor.

"I think Windsor has a really unique quality and to set it in a place in Canada that is a little bit smaller and not one of the major cities gives it an extra character,"said Collier.

Lau grew up in Windsor, after moving to Canada from Hong Kong. The producer said it was important for him to put his hometown in the spotlight.

"This is where I grew up and I want to bring my first feature back to where I grew up and film it here,"said Lau, who also teaches at the university.

While some of the filming for Stand Up Man is taking place in Windsor, there are parts being shot in Toronto as well. The crew will be working in Windsor from May 2 to 10.

The film has received $120,000 in funding from Telefilm Canada, but there will be some crowdfunding taking place to help pay for the project.

Both Collier and Lau will be on CBC Radio's Windsor Morning on Tuesday to talk about the project. Tune in to 97.5 FM at 8:10 a.m. to hear more about the film.
