Town of Essex puts residents on alert after coyote sightings

The Town of Essex is asking residents to be on the lookout for coyotes, as multiple sightings have been reported in the county.

"It seems to be they're pretty much spread throughout the municipality," said Essex's acting chief administrative officer Donna Hunter."Not so much in Essex centre, obviously, but in the McGregor area Colchesterand Harrow areas."

Hunter saidabout six calls about the carnivores have been forwarded to her by councillors, and that people were mostly concerned about their pets and safety.

She addedthe town provides information on its website on how to deal with wild animals in the area, and simple tips on how to protect yourself including cleaning up dog faeces and not leaving pets tied up outdoors.

"The information we have says typically a coyote isn't going after human beings," said Hunter. "If you're out walking with your pet at night be very aware, make sure you have a flashlight and if you feel like you're in danger to call the OPP."

Hunterplans to reach out to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for more information on what to do next.
