White Christmas in Windsor highly unlikely this year

Two weeks out and the odds of a white Christmas in Windsor are slim to none, says Environment Canada.

"The chance of a white Christmas is dwindling at this point," Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson said Friday.

In fact, Windsor is more likely to set record highs between now and Christmas Day.

Coulson said new records could be set Saturday and Sunday in Windsor, with forecasted highs of 15 C and 14 C, respectively.

The current record highs for Saturday and Sunday are 13.9 C set in 1946 and 13.2 C set in 1991, respectively.

Coulson said "it is looking pretty likely" those records will fall this weekend.

"When we get these El Nino events, they give us a milder fall and winter," Coulson said.

The current El Nino weather phenomenon over the Pacific Ocean is expected to peak between October and January and could turn into one of the strongest on record.

As a result, Windsor just experienced the mildest November since 2011.

Coulson said temperatures between next Thursday and Sunday will be more seasonal before the mercury climbs again.

"As we get into the days leading up to Christmas, from Dec. 21 on, it looks like another shot of mild air," Coulson said. "Any [snow] we would have had would melt and it doesn't look like we'll get any fresh snow between then and Christmas Day."
