Environment Canada says that southwestern Ontario could see some of the effects of whatever remains of Hurricane Beryl this week.

The federal weather agency says that beginning late Tuesday night or Wednesday, the region could see torrential downpours at rates of 20 to 40 millimetres per hour. The rainfall is expected to continued into Thursday.

Local totals could be more than50 millimetres.

A special weather statement is in place for all of southern Ontario. The agency says it doesn't yet know for sure which areas will feel the impact.

"Although confidence in the exact track of the weather system is low, these types of systems in the past have given very high rainfall rates in torrential downpours. Rainfall warnings may be issued as confidence in the track of the system increases," the agency said in a statement.

Hurricane Beryl caused devastation in the Caribbean and Mexico earlier this month. Now downgraded to a tropical storm, it's still causing tornadoes and flooding inTexas and Louisiana.
