Windsor's downtown farmers market finds new home

Windsor's downtown farmers market is moving to Pelissier Street.

City councilapproved an application Tuesday to move the market from its current home near city hall at Charles Clark Square.

The move will require shutting down portions of Pelissier Street and part of Maiden Lane every Saturday to make room for pedestrians.

Members of the Downtown Residents Association Windsor, the group behind the farmers market, said the new location will improve the market dramatically.

"We didn't want to move from Charles Clark Square, but our time there was limited with the new city hall beingbuilt,"said the association's president, Mike Holdsworth.

"Plus the fact that the most successful markets in the world are street markets,"Holdsworth said.

The market has moved sites several times in recent years, going from the site of the former Greyhound bus terminal toCharles Clark Square.

Coun. Rino Bortolin has been trying to expedite the approval process to get the market in its new location this year. He too wants to see it have apermanent home.

"I think that's the idea, long-term, [to] kind of create a branding for that area maybe call it the market district or something like that," he said.
