Windsor police officer charged with assault

Windsor police have arrested and charged a sergeant with 32 years of experience, following an investigation by the Chatham-Kent Police Service.

According to a Windsor police media release issued Wednesday, Sgt. James Lucier has been charged with a single count of assault causing bodily harm. Lucier has been assigned to administrative duties.

Windsor police initially contacted the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) after an adult male was arrested on Jan. 23 by officers and transported to the force's detention centre at headquarters.

During his time at headquarters, the arrested man had a "physical interaction" with Lucier and was injured as a result.

"The prisoner was then escorted to hospital for medical assessment," according to Windsor police.

Due to the "less serious nature of the injury," Windsor police said, the SIU determined they didn't have jurisdiction to investigate.

Windsor police then reached out to Chatham-Kent police, who determined there were grounds to lay a criminal charge against Lucier, following an independent investigation.

Lucier was arrestedon Wednesday without incident, and is scheduled to appear in Windsor court on Sept. 3 at 9:30 a.m.
