Dietary supplement MdMt could hurt fertility, liver: Health Canada

MdMt, a dietary supplement containing synthetic steroids, may pose serious health risks including fertility and liver disorders, Health Canada warned Tuesday.

The federal agency said it has learned of one adverse reaction linked to MdMt, a body-building supplement that contains the steroids methyl-1-testosterone and methyldienolone. A 38-year-old man who took MdMt developed azoospermia, a condition where the semen doesn't contain a measurable level of sperm, Health Canada said.

One case of severe liver toxicity linked to the use of another product containing synthetic steroids has also been reported to Canadian authorities.

Products containing Methyl-1-testosterone and methyldienolone should only be taken under medical supervision. In Canada the steroids are only allowed for use in products that require a prescription.

However, Health Canada says it has learned the product was sold in stores and possibly over the internet.

Health Canada officials have turned the matter over to legal authorities to investigate.
