The North American box office achieved $11.4 billion US in ticket sales in 2016, topping the previous record set in 2015, according to data measurement company ComScore.

The year's highest grossing film was Finding Dory, the Disney animated film, which brought in $486.3 million.

Its closest rival was the Star Wars film Rogue One, which has been the top box office hit since its release three weeks ago. It brought in $408.2 million by yearend and topped Finding Dory if the New Year's weekend box office is included.

Other top films at the box office:

  • Captain America: Civil War, $408.1 million.
  • The Secret Life of Pets, $368.4 million.
  • The Jungle Book, $364 million.

Disney, which bought the rights to the Star Wars canon for $4 billion, had six of the top 10 movies, including The Force Awakens, which debuted in 2015, but continued to earn well into 2016.

With a dearth of winning summer blockbusters, the actual number of movie-goers is expected to be flat.

However, higher ticket pricesfor 3D, IMAX and other special movie formats, raised the box office above 2015 levels.
