Aretha Franklin breaks 2 ribs in fall

Aretha Franklin has broken two ribs after a fall at her home in Detroit.

Aretha Franklin has broken two ribs after a fall at her home in Detroit on Sunday.

The singer known as the Queen of Soul has had to postpone two free shows scheduled in New York next week, according to a statement from her office.

Franklin, 68, suffered abdominal pain and has been advised by doctors to undergo further medical tests.

Franklin said she hopes to reschedule the New York shows for late August.

"I was very much looking forward to being in Brooklyn and having a foot-long hot dog at Coney Island," she said in a statement. "Hopefully, I will get it before the end of August."

Last week, she performed in Philadelphia in a concert appearance that featured former U.S. secretary of state Condoleezza Rice playing piano.

Franklin appeared in Ottawa in May and is scheduled to play Casino Rama in Orillia, Ont., on Sept. 16.

A multiple Grammy Award winner, Franklin was the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Last year, she sang at the inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama.
