British singer Amy Winehouse hospitalized after fainting spell

Amy Winehouse was taken to hospital Monday afternoon after the troubled soul singer fainted at her north London home.

Amy Winehouse was taken to hospital Monday afternoon after the troubled soul singer fainted at her north London home.

Chris Goodman, a spokesperson for the Grammy Award-winning British singer, said that Winehouse had suffered a fainting spell, but was caught by her assistant before she fell to the ground.

"She quickly recovered and her father, Mitch, took her to hospital as a precaution," Goodman said in a statement.

He added that doctors are investigating the cause of the incident and that after undergoing tests, she may be kept overnight.

Goodman said that the singer had been signing autographs for Canadian fans outside her home and collapsed after they left.

The 24-year-old singer is regular headline fodder for her erratic behaviour, ongoing substance abuse issues and worries about her health, as well as for her husband Blake Fielder-Civil, currently in prison awaiting sentencing for attacking a bartender.

Popular performer

Rising to international fame in 2006, Winehouse has become as well known for her acclaimed second album, Back to Black, as she is for cancelling gigs, inconsistency when she does perform, violent outbursts at bars and battles with drug rehabilitation.

Videos and photos of Winehouse purportedly taking drugs have also surfaced in the U.K. and she has on several occasions been detained by police.

Regardless, the singer continues to be much sought after as a performer.

Winehouse was reportedly paid a hefty sum to perform a short concert last week at a Moscow art gallery opening for the girlfriend of Russian millionaire and Chelsea soccer club owner Roman Abramovich.

This summer, she is scheduled to perform at several music festivals and will take the stage at London's Hyde Park in late June for the concert celebrating the 90th birthday of Nelson Mandela.

She is also said to be teaming up with hit producer Mark Ronson again to work on her new album.
