Bubl, K'naan win SOCAN Awards

Vancouver singer Michael Bubls Havent Met You Yet won two SOCAN Awards Monday night as the pop-rock song that had the most airplay and the song with the highest international earnings in 2010.

The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada annually celebrates the year's most-played songs and the country's most successful artists.

Monday's SOCAN Awards gala was hosted by Steven Page, formerly of the Barenaked Ladies, country singer Michelle Wright and rapper Abdominal.

Toronto musician K'naan brought home two trophies for his songWavin' Flag, as performed by Young Artists for Haiti: international achievement and a SOCAN Award for radio play.

Other songs recognized for radio play in 2010 were Hedley's Perfect and Nickelback's This Afternoon.

Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor werehonoured withSOCAN classics awardsfor six of their songs:

  • Five Days in May.
  • Hasnt Hit Me Yet.
  • How Long.
  • It Could Happen to You.
  • Lost Together.
  • Til I Am Myself Again.

Other classic tunesrecognized for hitting 100,000 airplays included Crowbar's Oh What a Feeling, Bruce Cockburn's Waiting for a Miracle and the Lighthouse hitsSunny Days and Pretty Lady.

Other SOCAN Awards presented Monday:

  • Lifetime achievement: The Stampeders, the Calgary rockers known for 70s hit Sweet City Woman.
  • National achievement: Prairie Oyster,the Ontario-based country music group.
  • Dance music award:Pick Up the Phone by electropop group Dragonette.
  • Urban music award:Body Bounce by rapper Kardinal Offishall, featuring Akon.
  • Country music awards: I Believe in Angels by George Canyon, Make Hay While the Sun Shines by Steven Lee Olsen andUp All Night by Deric Ruttan.
