Canada shut out of foreign-language Oscar race

Nine foreign-language films have made it to the short list in the 2010 Oscar race, but Canadian entry J'ai Tu Ma Mre is not among them.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released a list Wednesday of films that were selected among the 65 that qualified for a foreign-language film Oscar.

Well-regarded French prison film, Un Prophte (The Prophet) and Germany's The White Ribbon,are among the finalists. Australia's aboriginal tragedy Samson & Delilah, directed by Warwick Thornton, also made the cut.

However Quebec director Xavier Dolan's debut film J'ai Tu Ma Mre (I Killed My Mother) was not chosen.

  • Argentina, El Secreto de Sus Ojos, directed by Juan Jose Campanella.
  • Australia, Samson & Delilah, Warwick Thornton.
  • Bulgaria,The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks around the Corner, directed by Stephan Komandarev.
  • France, Un Prophte, directed by Jacques Audiard.
  • Germany, The White Ribbon, directed by Michael Haneke.
  • Israel, Ajami, directed by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani.
  • Kazakhstan, Kelin, directed by Ermek Tursunov.
  • The Netherlands, Winter in Wartime, directed by Martin Koolhoven.
  • Peru, The Milk of Sorrow, directed by Claudia Llosa.

The final five nominees will be revealed on Feb. 2.
