Canadian Screen Awards 2016: Schitt's Creek, Orphan Black and Room win big

Schitt's Creek, Orphan Black and Roomwere the big winners at Sunday night's Canadian Screen Awards orshould we say "The Candys"?

Host Norm Macdonald introduced the idea of renaming the awards in honour of late Canadian comedian John Candy at the beginning of the show, and both presenters and recipients happily embraced the idea.

Nine-year-old Jacob Tremblay, who later won Best Actor in a Leading Role for the movie Room, was the first to adopt Macdonald's proposalas he presented the "Candy" for Best Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role to Ari Millenof the television series Orphan Black.

Room won nine awards in total Sunday night, including best actress forBrie Larson, who also won theOscar in the same category last month.

Emma Donoghue took home the Canadian Screen Award for best adapted screenplay and Joan Allen won for best supporting actress. The film also won best motion picture and achievement in directing, editing and makeup.

CBC'sSchitt's Creekdominated the television comedy category, winningbestcomedyseries, best actor in a continuing leading comedic role(Eugene Levy), best actress in a continuing leading comedic role(Catherine O'Hara).

The series won sixmore Canadian Screen Awards earlier in the week, including best writing, best supporting actor and best supporting actress.

Bell Media's Orphan Black won seven awards in the drama category throughout the week, including Tatiana Maslany'sbest actress trophy on Sunday.

Sunday's star-studded gala finished off aweek of celebrating the past year'sachievementsin Canadian film, television and digital media. It was broadcast from theSony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.
