CBC News nabs dozens of Canadian Screen Awards nominations

Flanked by its flagship news broadcast, local reporting and special programming, CBC News is set to march in to the Canadian Screen Awards with 33 television nominations.

The National picked up eight nominations four of them coming from the Best News or Information Segment, which has five total nominees while TV newsmagazine the fifth estate nabbed four and consumer advocacy program Marketplace three.

Peter Mansbridge, who plans tostep down from the helm of The National this summer afteranchoring the special Canada Day coverage on July 1, was nominated forBest Hostor Interviewer in a News or Information Program or Series for MansbridgeOne on One. CBC hosts WendyMesley,Rosemary Barton andAdrianHarewood were alsonominated in the same category.

Heather Hiscox and Ian Hanomansing are both nominated forBest News Anchor, National, while Nahlah Ayedand Diana Swain along with producersTimothySawa andLori Ward are nominated for Best Reportage, National.

CBC's local reporting will be well represented, with nods going to Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Natalie Clancy,YvetteBrendandKaren Burgess ofCBC Vancouver News at Six are nominated for Best Reportage, Local, while six CBC anchors are nominated forBest News Anchor, Local.

But CBC News will face tough competition: Global and CTV both have ninenominations in categories in which CBC News is also nominated.

On the digital side, CBC News has one nominationfor CBC NewsB.C. in the Best Cross-Platform Project Non-fiction category. VICE Media, which launched its TV and digital properties in Canada back in 2015, had three digital nominations.

"Every day the teams at CBC News work very hard to bring Canadians insight about their communities, their country and their world," CBC News editor in chief Jennifer McGuire said of the nominations.

"We have rigorous standards and we push hard to lead with investigative stories and insightful analysis," she added."That's because we believe that facts, evidence and context are the bedrock values of public service journalism.

"It is affirming to have this work recognized so broadly across our many local and national programs by the CSAs."

The Canadian Screen Awards, which celebrate production for the past year, will be presented at several ceremonies during Canadian Screen Week 2017 fromMarch 9 to 12 in Toronto.

The festivities conclude with a televised awards show on March 12. It will behosted by Howie Mandeland broadcast on CBC-TV.

Christopher Plummer is to receive a special lifetime achievement honour during the ceremony.
