The Canadian director on his first reaction to the Demolition script and why Jake Gyllenhaal was perfect to star.

Director Jean-Marc Valle has been making movies for years, but when screenwriter Bryan Sipe's script forDemolition crossed his path, he was blown away.

"It was so unpredictable," the Quebec filmmaker told CBC News.

"Itwas so funny, surprising, shocking, provocative, edgy and yet deeply moving."

Demolition, which opened the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival in September, tells the story of a grieving investment banker named Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal), who attempts to rebuild his life aftera tragic loss.

The cast of the comedic drama also includes Naomi Watts, Judah Lewis andChris Cooper.
