Emily Carr art show opens in London

Iconic Canadian artist Emily Carr finally has her first-ever show in Britain at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London.

Carr is one of Canada's best-known artists, but she's virtually unknown overseas.

Art experts predict that will finally change with the exhibition opening last Saturday, nearly 70 years after the artist's death.

The Dulwich Picture Gallery is the same gallery which had record-breaking success three years ago with another Canadian art show: Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven.

The exhibition was co-curated by Dulwich director Ian Dejardin, along with Canadian art critic Sarah Milroy. Some of the art works were shipped over from the Art Gallery of Ontario's collection.

AGO director Matthew Teitelbaum told CBC News, "I think Emily Carr deserves an international audience and my dream would be that people begin to put her work into international survey exhibitions about the trends of 20th centuryart."

Dejardin was confident about how the British public will respond to Carr's luminous landscapes of forests and First Nations totem poles. "They love landscape," he said. "They are tree huggers to a man. They're going to love Emily Carr."

From the Forest to the Sea: Emily Carr in British Columbia is on display at the Dulwich Picture Gallery until Mar.8, 2015.The show opens at the Art Gallery of Ontario in April.
